Company Services
Timber Inspections:
Pelagic Technologies Inc. (Pelagic) offers detailed structural inspections on underwater timber structures typical of public and private wharf and dock structures found throughout coastal BC. Underwater inspections are conducted using visual, tactile or probing techniques in order to determine the impact of biological or mechanical damage, extent of potential cross-section loss and to document the location for repairs. Above-water timber components are assessed using a variety of methods including, sounding, drilling and increment coring to determine cross-section loss due to mechanical damage, insect or fungal attack. Remedial treatment methods are available in order to extend the service life of timber structures and Pelagic recommends and encourages proper remedial care to extend the life of your timber marine structure when possible.
Steel Inspections:
Pelagic offers underwater and above-water visual and ultrasonic inspections on all steel components to determine levels of corrosion and oxidization damage as well as remaining wall thickness of steel pipe, sheet and ‘H’ piles and bracing. Inspections of cathodic protection systems and mapping of potential current readings are also conducted.
Concrete Inspections:
Pelagic conducts above and below-water visual inspections on concrete structures including piling, superstructure, bridge abutments, caissons, hydroelectric facilities etc. All levels of visual inspections are conducted in order to determine mechanical damage or chemical deterioration.
Bridge Inspections:
Led by trained bridge inspection supervisors (US DOT – National Hwy. Institute), dive crews conduct all levels of bridge substructure and superstructure inspections including pier and footing condition, depth profiling, scour surveys and scour related foundation undercutting and damage.
Environmental assessments & Biophysical Surveys:
Pelagic conducts comprehensive underwater surveys and assessments in order to record and map species and substrate, estimate percentages of biota, assess habitat baseline features and identify and record anthropogenic debris. Pelagic utilizes differential Global Positioning Systems (dGPS) with digital depth sounders and underwater digital video and photography in order to accurately report conditions within survey areas.
Environmental Monitoring:
Pelagic provides on-site Environmental Monitoring services for all marine or aquatic construction projects. This encompasses the monitoring of contractors with regards to their conduct around such regulation as the Fisheries Act and Department of Fisheries and Oceans standards for Works around Water and applicable Best Management Practices. We oversee the implementation of mitigation strategies and measures that help protect our natural environments. We act as liaison between the owners and contractors to help you feel confident that all work is being completed with the utmost care for the environment to all known standards above and beyond. Long term monitoring and compensation strategies can also be implemented as necessary.
Project Supervision:
Pelagic offers project management during installation, repair and construction of marine facilities and floating structures such as floats, wharves and floating breakwaters. Having experienced on-site representation allows our clients to have confidence that projects are being carried out according to their contract specifications and budget.
Reporting and Drafting:
Comprehensive bound technical reports are produced in order to communicate the results of each project. Our findings are compiled using the following applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, AutoCAD, PowerPoint, and digital photography and video editing.
Underwater Construction / Repair
Pelagic offers underwater construction, repair and salvage services. We use a variety of equipment for these tasks including hydraulic tools (with biodegradable oil), rock drills, chainsaw, impact drills & wrenches, heavy-duty air lifts (8 tons). Industry certified and highly trained personnel are part of every Occupational diving crew to accomplish the job properly and in a timely manner to your required budget.
